Tidings From Brother Thomas
It gives me much pleasure to announce that the honoree for our seventh annual Spring Gala is Mr. Peter Castellana. From the beginning days of The De La Salle School Peter has been an ardent and generous supporter of our work at The De La Salle School. More than a quarter of a million dollars have come into our coffers due to his generosity! Peter reflects back on his experience as a cadet at La SalleMilitaryAcademy and recalls the importance of knowing and feeling that someone cares. Certainly the young men at The De La Salle School benefit significantly from the caring he manifests for them. Someday they too will be in a position to give something back and Peter’s example is a model for their future philanthropy. The Gala occurs at the Hempstead Golf and Country Club on Friday evening, 1 May 2009. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us as we pay tribute to one of our very special benefactors!

“Rewards Club” Update
Fridays are special at The De La Salle School. Following the 12:10 PM Mass at Our HolyRedeemer and lunch, it is time for “Rewards Club” – an hour or so devoted to various activities where students can learn new skills, play some games, expend some pent-up energy, and have fun! Learning about photography, planting perennials, and honing track skills were some of lastFall’s choices.
Now our students have another set of options: learning to communicate in American Sign Language with Mr. Brendan Rowley; practicing their salsa, meringué, and cha cha cha steps under the direction of Mrs. Joan MacNaughton from Leggz Ltd. in RockvilleCentre; and developing their stage presence and public speaking skills with our volunteer thespian, Mrs. Grace Totten.Students whose grades are low spend the time in “Academic Intervention” and receive hands-on tutoring from science, technology, and religion teacher, Ms. Carly Matsen. And for the handful of students who might need to improve their behavior, they learn to make better choices while spending time in “Remediation” with our Dean of Academics, Mrs. Kathy Boniello. All in all, a good way to end the week!
Writer of the Week You can almost smell this delicious dessert as described by fifth grader, Russell.
Dear Journal,Yum! That’s so good. That’s my favorite dessert. Chocolate chip cookies with ice cream on the side. That fires me up every time I eat it! Sometimes when I eat it I melt in more chocolate chips to give it more taste. Even sometimes I make my own sandwich – cookies as the bun and ice cream in the middle. I can’t stop making that, that tasty goodness. Once I tried something else, adding apple pie. If anyone tries that it will blow their tops with delicious goodness. I call it the hyper food. If you are someone who likes sweets, this is your food to eat. Don’t ever add sugar or you’ll be hyped for eternity! That is why it’s my favorite food for sure. No dessert can beat this goodness, and I know it! Your friend, Russell
